Article Summary

- Director Ishana Night Shyamalan's film struggled in theaters, earning $25 million globally.
- Star-studded cast includes Dakota Fanning and Georgina Campbell in this eerie thriller.
- An autumn release might have better served this non-franchise horror's box office potential.
The Watchers, the debut feature film from director Ishana Night Shyamalan, will be available to watch at home on digital services on June 28th, three weeks after it opened in theaters. A disc release will follow on August 27th. The film has not found a huge audience in theaters, so far grossing $25 million worldwide. The film stars Dakota Fanning (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Georgina Campbell (Barbarian), Oliver Finnegan ("Creeped Out"), and Olwen Fouere (The Northman). Like many other horror releases so far this year, it feels like this one will come and go fast.
The Watchers Should Have Been A Fall Film
From producer M. Night Shyamalan comes The Watchers, written for the screen and directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan and based on the novel by A.M. Shine. The film follows Mina, a 28-year-old artist, who gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. When Mina finds shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are watched and stalked by mysterious creatures each night. You can't see them, but they see everything. Joining writer/director Shyamalan behind-the-camera are director of photography Eli Arenson ("Lamb," "Hospitality"), production designer Ferdia Murphy ("Lola," "Finding You"), editor Job ter Burg ("Benedetta," "Elle"), and costume design by Frank Gallacher ("Sebastian," "Aftersun"). The music is by Abel Korzeniowski ("Till," "The Nun").
I actually think the release date may have crushed this one. Summer can be a great time to release a horror film, but one with a mysterious concept and not part of a franchise to bring in the core audience can be a bit of a challenge. If this had been released in the fall, I think The Watchers may have found more of an audience. Maybe at home, it will.
