Ticket Booth: War For Planet Of The Big Sick

Time for another edition of Ticket Booth, and it's another relatively slow week at the movies, since other studios didn't want to compete with big franchises.

The purpose of this segment is to help people try to figure out what movie they might want to see this weekend. As always, I can't tell you how to spend your money, because that is entirely up to you. I can only offer my opinion based on the movies I've seen, and nothing else.

This week we're looking at War for the Planet of the Apes and The Big Sick, which opened on Friday.

The kids' choices are pretty easy right now. If they haven't seen Spider-Man: Homecoming, then take them to see it. This is a Marvel movie that is truly geared toward the entire family. While it might be a little long at over two hours, a good movie will keep kids, even young ones, engaged throughout the entire production.

The moments that kids won't like are easily matched by the ones that they will. Even if your child is not a fan of superhero movies, they are probably going to like Spider-Man: Homecoming. If it's really not their thing, Despicable Me 3 is still out there, and its target audience of small children will love that one (though the parents in the audience might find it a bit dull). Cars 3 is still out there, too, and out of the two animated movies is probably the stronger one.

Teens and young adults looking for a movie to see this week will absolutely enjoy War for the Planet of the Apes. It's not a typical blockbuster, and while teenagers under 14 might not appreciate it, high school kids are going to love it. The movie might be a little slow for the taste of some looking for a weekend popcorn binge with 90 minutes of explosions, but this is a smart sci-fi movie that will make you think.

This movie, and this series, is one that challenges the audience and never puts the blame on science for ruining the world. Most teenagers don't want "we should never meddle in God's domain" as a message from their science fiction, which these movies never say. If the Apes movies are not your jam, then again, Spider-Man: Homecoming is one of the best Marvel movies to date.

We finally have a good "date night" movie for the adults in the audience. The Big Sick, which had a limited release for the last two weeks and finally had its wide launch this week, is the perfect date night movie. It's funny and sweet, but not in a tooth-rotting type of way. There's a misconception that romantic comedies only appeal to women, but The Big Sick is one that absolutely crosses gender gaps. This is a date night movie that both sexes can agree is good.

If that still doesn't sound like a good time A Ghost Story is out for there in limited release for those looking for a completely different experience. The film will challenge you, as an audience member, on everything from your perception of life and death to the passage of time itself. War for the Planet of the Apes is also perfect for adults just as much as teenagers, maybe even more so, since it's very mature trilogy of movies. If none of that sounds fun, Baby Driver and Wonder Woman are both still fantastic and deserve your support and multiple watches.
