The Walking Dead Sixth Season – It's All About The Butchery
To celebrate the launch of The Walking Dead: the Complete Sixth Season on Bluray™ and DVD on 26th September, Bleeding Cool was invited to an 'evening of butchering' at noted London meat merchants Turner & George.
Well, a butchery class anyway.
The PR invite read: "You've seen all the gruesome hacking and violent killings and now it's time for you to experience this yourself… in a safe and controlled environment – where every being is very much alive, bar one animal…"
A compelling and hard to ignore invitation!
Butchery has experienced a renaissance across both sides of the Atlantic over the past few years – a manly art that become aspirational to city dwellers.
I like eating meat and enjoy it the way nature intended: pre-packaged from a super market.
Could I handle the feel of cutting through flesh and sawing through bone, let alone survive in Rick Grimes' world?
Led by our instructor and butcher Andre from Portugal, the answer was a resounding yes.
Donning a protective metal glove on my left hand, I took to hacking with zeal on my right, breaking down a side of pork then de-boning, rolling and tying pork cuts into pork sirloin roasting joints. The 'human flesh' the walkers eat in the series is in fact ham soaked in vinegar so choosing a pig seemed appropriate.
Andre, I learned, can gut a whole pig in two minutes and joked that sometimes he'd rather deal with dead meat than living customers.
Throughout the experience I thought that 'if' you were the type of person who needed to 'get rid' of a body – for whatever reason – a butchery class could be a wise investment. You learn a little bit about anatomy and I loved the butcher's creed that no meat is wasted and everything can be used. Negan would be proud.
Other facts I learned:
- Pig heads are very popular with students and around Halloween. Depending on weight, a pigs head could be yours for less than £5 GBP – a bargain price for some authentic blood and guts that's sure to up the freak out factor at any party
- Whenever a main character is killed off on the show, the cast and crew have a huge 'Last Supper' dinner on the day they film their death scenes to celebrate. Not sure if they eat pork though.
Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yuen and Noman Reedus all return as Rick, Glenn and Daryl respectively in what I thought was a particularly strong sixth season, a view cemented by the introduction of Jeffrey Dean Thomas as Negan who ensured the season ended on a massive cliff-hanger. It's well worth your time if you've not caught up so check it out.
