The Blob Is Being Made Again, This Time With David Bruckner

A new remake of The Blob is in the works with Hellraiser director David Bruckner directing, and we have an option for the star of the movie.

Article Summary

  • A new remake of The Blob is confirmed, with David Bruckner set to direct.
  • The 1958 classic has been remade twice before and is a sci-fi/horror staple.
  • Tom Cruise is eyed for the lead, following his production deal with Warner Bros.
  • Project details are scarce, but the film may likely be a direct-to-streaming release.

The Blob will ooze its way back into our lives. According to The Wrap, Warner Bros. tapped David Bruckner for a new take on the creature feature. Stop me if you heard this one before, but the plot details and everything else about the project are under wraps. Bruckner's last film was 2022's Hellraiser, which I loved, and he has also made The Night House and directed segments of the VHS franchise. The Blob debuted in 1958 and has been remade two other times. What more needs to be said about a giant red mass enveloping people? I don't know, but I do have an idea about who should star in it for WB based on some news from earlier today.

The Blob. Tom Cruise. Make It So.

Earlier today, news broke that Tom Cruise has signed a huge production deal with WB, both for original and franchise films for theaters. Why not throw this one his way? If nothing else, we would see endless footage of Cruise running away from The Blob, and they already have my money right there. More than likely, though, this will go straight to Max. Right now, studios are being very careful with what titles they throw to theaters, and I am not sure another one of these will work theatrically. Visually, sure, but as a film that makes money, there is no way without a star like Cruise.

It has been years and years since I have watched any of The Blob films, so I couldn't tell you much about them, and maybe that is the point. This is a horror/sci-fi staple that could use some updating the more I think about it. I bet it is more like slime this time out since all kids love slime these days. Who knows. I do think they need to swing for the fences.
