Wonder Woman Is The Highest Grossing Superhero Origin Story

Wonder Woman continues to just dominate the box office in ways that is no doubt making Warner Bros and DC Comics giddy. The movie recently passed $800 million dollars in the worldwide box office, which is great for a production people thought was going to fail. It ranks #64th in the worldwide box office totals for all time and it still hasn't opened in Japan.

It broke another record recently. According to Box Office Mojo Wonder Woman is now the highest grossing domestic superhero origin release ever. It just slipped by 2002's Spider-Man which grossed $403 million. Wonder Woman is at $404 currently and it has beaten out such juggernauts as Deadpool, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Batman. While Spider-Man still holds the worldwide record with $821 million it's completely plausible that Wonder Woman could easily pass that after it opens in Japan on August 25th.

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman has turned into the kind of hit that Warner Bros and DC has needed since Nolan closed out his trilogy. There is a reason they're probably going to offer director Patty Jenkins anything she wants to return for the sequel. It wouldn't be surprising if they decided to turn Diana into the Tony Stark of the DC Extended Universe in that she turns up in other movies. There is a reason Wonder Woman II got a release date before another Batman movie or Superman movie. The audience has spoken; they want more Diana and with every record Wonder Woman breaks it just proves to those executives that female lead projects make money and speak to people.

Summary: Before she was Wonder Woman she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained warrior. When a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, she leaves home to fight a war to end all wars, discovering her full powers and true destiny.

Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, David Thewlis, Robin Wright, and Connie Nielsen. Check it out in theaters now.
