Moon Prism Power…. Make Up, All Moonies Unite!
By Ale Bodden
Viz Media conquered SDCC with a total of three panels throughout the convention- with one whole hour dedicated to Sailor Moon on Saturday. This panel was hosted by Charlene Ingram, Senior Manager of Viz Media and Amy Marr, Marketing Coordinator. Not too long ago a nostalgic wave of Sailor Moon started shaking up the fan community, and low and behold: Sailor Moon is now back in all its fine glory for all tastes. The manga was revamped and the classical Sailor Moon we all grew up with started popping out everywhere: new merchandise, playing on hulu, the presence in conventions slightly more noticeable and people raising their voices one by one…
As someone who grew up outside the US, I was baffled to hear how they had butchered the anime, censored, and changed big parts of the story because of it– To add more, they didn't even show the final season and changed gender/relationship of some characters . *Cough-they are not cousins, they are lovers- cough* (I am looking at Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus, here). You can imagine how crazy the whole room got when Ingram, announced that the online anime channel, Neon Alley, will be showing all 200 episodes of Sailor Moon– uncut, re-mastered, and dubbed, or subbed; a couple of episodes will go up every Monday. Everything will stay true to the show: no name changes, no sex changes or censorship will ruin it this time around. They even showed us clips of episodes that never aired in the US before… I'm thinking the rest of the world was able to hear the screaming fans from their cozy homes.
They also announced that they will be releasing the classical Sailor Moon in DVD/Bluray & Digital Limited Edition Boxed Sets. The first set (episodes 1-23) is set to release on November 11th this year. It will be an uncut and re-mastered run that looks beautiful so far, and the box is so shiny and sparkly! It will also come with a booklet with +50 pages, 6 Discs, and more than 1 hour worth of extras, plus closed caption. I wonder if they will have the Spanish version, too… They also unveiled who will be voicing the characters we all love this time around for the English version.
New Sailor Moon English Cast:
Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon- Stephanie Sheh
Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask- Robbie Daymond
Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury- Kate Higgins
Rei Hino/Sailor Mars- Christina Vee
Minako Aino/ Sailor Venus- Cherami Leigh
Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter- Amanda Miller
Luna- Michelle Ruff
Artemis- Johnny Yong Bosch
And for the supporting cast we will hear Danielle Nicole, Ben Diskin, Tara Platt, Keith Silverstein, Nicolas Roye, Cindy Robinson, Todd Haberkorn, Liam O'Brien, Lucien Dodge, and Patrick Seitz among others…
For Sailor Moon Crystal we still don't have a date on when the dubbed version or DVD set will come out, we were just told that the whole series needs to air first before it can move to that production stage. However, it will be 26 episodes—they will all be broadcasted at the same time worldwide every 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month.
After the panel we were all given a SDCC Sailor Moon poster promoting the classical version—which I was glad for, considering the poster I was given the day before got ruined as I exited the convention center. Viz Media was also giving away a two week subscription to HuluPlus in their booth after the panel, the code came on a beautiful Sailor Moon themed SDCC exclusive card, and I was lucky enough to get one of the last ones!
