The Kingsman: The Golden Circle Panel At San Diego Comic-Con

Hall H at Comic-Con International is one of those things that people either love or hate. Much like Celebration Stage or Hall D23, these packed panels are often things that need to be experienced because the atmosphere is something to behold. The first Hall H panel I covered this year was for Kingsman: The Golden Circle. What was originally titled a 20th Century Fox panel several days ago it was changed to just being a Kingsman panel. We got a new footage from the upcoming movie along with some other fun extras.

The first thing we got to see was a little crossover animation between FXX's Archer and the Kingsman. Fox decided that releasing it online was the right thing to do. This is the crossover we never knew we needed, and the crowd of Hall H was absolutely loving it.

The atmosphere surrounding this movie is great. The first panel of Comic-Con International felt like it had a lot of energy behind it. The original movie was a hit by word of mouth, and this sequel is a big deal, as director Matthew Vaughn has never done a sequel before. Vaughn is still editing the movie and couldn't attend, but he had something special for the panel nevertheless: the first 10 minutes of the movie.

golden circleThe good news for people who are worried about being spoiled by trailers: a majority of the footage from those trailers appears to be from this opening fight and car chase. The movie begins with Eggsy (Taron Egerton) arriving at the Kingsman tailor shop. Eggsy is confronted by Charlie (Edward Holcraft), the Kingsman recruit who failed late in training. Charlie puts a gun to Eggsy's head and they end up fighting. They eventually end up in the air of a car and that crazy car chase from the trailer happens. We also find out that Charlie has a metal arm, Winter Soldier-style. It ends with Eggsy crashing the car and sending Charlie through the windshield. Charlie survives and more men are sent after Eggsy.

We see the second part of the chase as three cars, topped with guns, are trying to run Eggsy off the road. Eggsy finally contacts Merlin (Mark Strong) and they debate how to take care of the problem. Eggsy eventually just fires three rockets that take the cars out. Merlin tells him to go into the water, but his windshield is broken. Merlin reminds him that Eggsy was fine holding his breath during training. All is well, as car turns into a mini sub when it hits the water, and the scene ends with Eggsy finding a Kingsman base underwater. The water resins and we hear Eggsy gasping for breath.

The chase scenes are completely over the top and insane in the best kind of way. The audience was loving the action and they were extremely into it. They brought the panel out, which included almost the entire cast were there including Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Halle Berry, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, and Pedro Pascal were joined by screenwriter Jane Goldman and Kingsman co-creator Dave Gibbons. Gibbons declared that he was going to draw Egerton as Eggsy, and they would be giving the original art to whoever asked the best question. There was a little bit of back and forth with the panel until we got to the second clip they were going to show us:

It opens in Kentucky and Merlin and Eggsy are at the Statesman distillery. They manage to bypass a biometric lock and begin to look around. Merlin thinks he's found a hidden entrance, but he ends up putting a hole in a barrel of whiskey. That's when Agent Tequila (Channing Tatum) catches them. They have a have and forth for a bit, but they end up fighting. Merlin goes down fast, but Eggsy can almost hold his own. Tequila manages to get Eggsy's watch to fire the sleeping darts and the scene ends with Eggsy wondering who Tequila was. The crowd lost their minds when Tatum appeared on screen and nearly cheered during the fight.

The Kingsman: The Golden Circle Panel At San Diego Comic-ConWe got some more time with the panel, including Halle Barry chugging half a pint of of whiskey and looking a little worse for wear for it. We got Vaughn on FaceTime for a bit and then we got to see the final scene.

This time, we got some time with our villain Poppy (Julianne Moore), who declares that she has a total monopoly over the drug market. She has created a small '50s-style diner in the middle of nowhere, and that's where she lives. One of her minions is trying to bring in someone new, and Poppy tells them that she will not stand for people questioning her. She askes the man she is trying to recruit to throw his friend into a meat grinder. They all laugh about it until it becomes apparent that she's serious. He tries to escape, but is stopped by some robot dogs and ends up in the grinder, Fargo-style. The clip shows the meat coming out, and the audience was not okay with that. Poppy sends her new loyal minion off for a "makeover" that includes burning off his fingertips and getting a golden circle embedded on his chest. When he returns to Poppy, she offers him a fresh burger — and it's very obvious that this meat was made with people. The man eats it and Poppy looks extremely pleased by this fact.

The Kingsman: The Golden Circle Panel At San Diego Comic-ConAll in all, the panel went really well. They showed a ton of footage and we got to see what kind of movie we can expect out in September. There were a fair amount of people leaving as well, which meant that there were people who just went for that panel. It was nice to see a group so happy about what was originally such a small production. Now it's in Hall H with a bunch of screaming fans. Our little Kingsman is all grown up.
