AMC Cancels 'Hap and Leonard' After 3 Seasons
AMC, who owns SundanceTV, has cancelled Hap and Leonard after three seasons, THR.com reports. The series starred James Purefoy as Hap Collins, an East Texas white man with an predilection for southern women and his best friend, Leonard Pine, a gay black Vietnam vet with a bad temper played by Michael K. Williams. The show was based on a series of novels by writer Joe R. Lansdale, each season following one of the books in the series with the first being Savage Season, the second Mucho Mojo and the last being The Two-Bear Mambo.
Lansdale broke the news on social media late Monday:
Hap and Leonard officially canceled. Sundance's highest-rated show, 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Three seasons wraps it up, dudes. It was an honor to have worked with the folks on the show, actors, crew, writers and thanks for putting up with grumpy me. Wish there were more seasons, but hey, we got three, and they were very fine indeed.
It was later confirmed by showrunner John Wirth. The series ran for a total of 18 episodes. The finale aired in April to a total audience of 220,000. SundanceTV appears to be moving away from original programming, filling their schedule with syndicated programs like M.A.S.H. and Law & Order.
