First Impressions Of Syfy's 'Happy!' Pilot And More From NYCC 2017
Danielle Mick writes from New York Comic Con 2017:
If you were able to attend the SyFy Panel at New York Comic Con, I am obligated to remind you that @HappySYFY wants to know what you thought about the pilot episode in exactly six words. I'll kick us off: Give me more to see, please!
The new Syfy show Happy! is based off of the graphic novel of the same name created by Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson. It is set to air on December 6th.
We were able to view the entirety of the pilot, and I have so many feelings to discuss.
The episode featured a creepy Santa, a little girl in a wooden box, and some sick-as-hell cinematography done in true-to-style comic book feel. It was a fast-paced, action-packed dark comedy complete with brutal action sequences, needles to the eye, Patrick Bateman-looking clear jackets, and much-needed hand sanitizer after bloody, bloody murders. I was on the edge of my seat, and I cannot wait to watch the following episodes.
The panel consisted of Morrison alongside star Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Oz), Patrick MacManus (Marco Polo), and Brian Taylor (Crank). The voice of the animated character of the series, Patton Oswalt, was not able to attend the con, but he did leave us a warm welcome to the Happy! family with a video message. "The character that I play is imaginary," he began, "so this is fitting."
Taylor, the director, spoke briefly on Oswalt's involvement with the project, keying in the audience on the fact that he was not on the filming set and recorded his lines from 3000 miles away. He spoke very highly of Oswalt's performance and stated that he accomplished something that not everyone could do. He really managed to find the balance between the darkness and the humor in the project, despite his absence from set.
The panel was hilarious. I really can't accurately describe the presence and chemistry between the people on the stage. They fed off of each other's energy in a magical way, cracking up the audience along with the other members.
"What are the central themes of the show?" was the question that got the longest response from our guests. I can't recount every single statement that was said between the four of them, but I have compiled a nice little list for you. Happy! promises to have "the worst Christmas ever," the flying sparks between positivity and negativity, the consistent objectification is the male lead, a redemption arc that runs the length of the season, and a very twisted coming-of-age tale for our young Hailey (Bryce Lorenzo).
When asked about the potential for an illustrated sequel for the beloved novel, Morrison laughed. "We kill 'em dead, so I don't know if there will be much of a sequel there, but hopefully there will be room for a sequel here."
I can tell you, however, that it gets "f**king insane." We have Meloni's promise.
