Mass Effect Film Gets New Writer Who Can Pump Up The Espionage Elements
Patrick Dane writes for Bleeding Cool
The Mass Effect videogame franchise is one of my favorite of all time.* Its blend of ideas, characterisation and grand scope all make for one of the most immersive experiences in gaming.
A film has been on the cards for a few years now and it is good to see that there is still momentum in the project. According to Variety, Legendary Pictures have hired Morgan Davis Foehl to have a crack at the script.
I Am Legend's Mark Protosevich handed in the first version but obviously the suits felt that there was still room for improvement. Foehl doesn't have any produced scripts yet but was an assitant editor on Rescue Me and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. He also had a script on the black list called Whatever Gets You Through the Night and has drafted an adaption of Top Cow's Crosshairs.
The producers are saying that they hired Foehl because he is a fan of the series and because he has a background with action and espionage scripts. I am a little worried about the word 'espionage' being thrown around. While Mass Effect centred on Shepard, the equivalent of a super space agent, it never really felt like a 'spy' game.
While it is hard to say anything about his track record, I choose to be optimistic. Mass Effect is one of the few properties I might ever feel precious about and seeing as the game's strengths aren't in how the central narrative unfolds I do think it might be a difficult adaptation, but let's see what Foehl turns up.
*Yes, even then end of the third one. We can fight about it later.
