Destiny 2's Scaling 2X System Is Being Removed After Player Complaints

Over the past week, Destiny 2 players found out that the game includes a system that makes experience scale depending on the rate at which it is acquired. Today Bungie posted an announcement on their forums addressing the righteous gamer rage caused by the discovery.

According to the developer, XP scales upwards when playing "longer or fixed duration activities like Crucible competitive multiplayer matches and the Leviathan Raid," while scales downwards while playing "activities that can be quickly, repeatedly chained, like grinding Public Events." Which we can understand why Bungie would scale XP that way. No game developer likes it when people can farm levels too easily. That said, prioritizing Crucible and the Raid is a little bit of a shot in the foot. Especially for players who don't have a guild or dedicated group of players that they routinely run Crucible and Raids with. As a gamer who typically ends up working as a solo player, this kind of thing really really bugs me. Because way to penalize me for not having six dedicated Destiny friends, Bungie.

Bungie did, however mention that the team is "not happy with the results," while also acknowledging that the community isn't happy as well. As a result, they are deactivating the system effective immediately.

Due to that, XP gain will change across the board but will be consistent with values displayed in the UI, which was previously not the case. The development team will continue to review XP data to make sure that it meets their expectations, and that of the players and any further changes will be communicated via official channels.

Destiny 2 is currently available for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Is first expansion Curse of Osiris will launch on December 5th for all platforms.
