Bleeding Cool Game Awards: Best Shooter of 2017

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds

For Bleeding Cool's Best Shooter of 2017, our three esteemed games judges were asked to weigh in on the best of the first and third person shooter market to determine which was the absolute best shooter of the year. It was a pretty stiff competition that mostly came down to three games, PUBGDestiny 2, and Call of Duty: WWII.

The nominees are:

  • Prey
  • Destiny 2
  • PlayerUnkown's Battlegrounds
  • Ghost Recon: Wildlands
  • Call of Duty: WWII
  • Resident Evil VII: Biohazard

Our judges scores were:

Prey 4 6 6 14
Destiny 2 1 1 5 7
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds 3 2 2 7
Ghost Recon: Wildlands 6 5 4 15
Call of Duty: WWII 2 4 1 7
Resident Evil VII: Biohazard 5 3 3 11

Yet another tie. Despite the fact that Call of Duty: WWII may have sold more copies than any other entry in the franchise, and the fact that it is a damn well designed and executed shooter, there are some things that just really turned us off. The loot boxes, for one. But also because being a good shooter is the absolute bottom line of what we expect from COD. It isn't groundbreaking, and regardless of sales numbers, people aren't going home and streaming themselves playing COD quite the way PUBG players are.

PUBG is a game that came out of nowhere and took over the FPS scene because it understands exactly what you want from a shooter. To kill as many other players as possible. Despite the prevalence of aimbots and stream stalkers, everyone is playing PUBG. And they're sticking with the game despite its problems for a very, very good reason. It is damn fun. And at the end of the day, when asked to weigh in on which was the best of the year, you just can't beat PUBG's simplicity.

As for Destiny 2, well. That 5 from Gavin really does spoil things, doesn't it?
