Rick and Morty Creator Explains the Delayed Season 4 Renewal

Fans of the Adult Swim cartoon series Rick and Morty breathed a little easier recently when it was announced that the show had finally been renewed. Not only had it been renewed but it was renewed for a staggering 70 episodes. Fans have been wondering what took so long to get the renewal, and it turns out that creators Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland were trying to secure a more long term deal according to a profile on Harmon that GQ did.

Harmon and Roiland say they're holding out for a contract that grants them immortality. Or, if immortality is unavailable, at least "many, many, many more seasons," and enough money so that, as Roiland says, Harmon "doesn't have to take 12 other jobs while we're working on season four." That way, Harmon can give Rick and Morty the full attention it deserves. To be able to follow his bliss, without taking on a dozen other tortures-for-hire.

Later on in the profile they speak to Harmon after the announcement of the 70 episode renewal has taken place.

"I'm ecstatic. … I can finally actually breathe and be as excited as I've wanted to be," Harmon says.

Harmon, however, acknowledges that while this is good news he is having a hard time accepting that it's real and even manages to make a joke at his own expense at how he got shingles right around the announcement.

"I definitely agree with my therapist that I'm a very lucky guy," he says. "One of the last biggest problems I'm gonna need to solve about myself is my ability to process happiness. How can I respond to good news without assuming I'm going to catch a disease?"

At the moment we don't know when the four season of Rick and Morty is going to come out, but now that the creative team have secured such a massive deal there shouldn't be a years-long wait like there was between season two and season three.
