All-New Wolverine #35 Review: A Warm Finish to a Solid Series
Maria Hill has fallen, but Wolverine, Honey Badger, Wasp, Hawkeye, and Captain Marvel must press on. World peace is at hand; there is only one more obstacle to overcome: Doctor Doom. The only question is whether Laura can live long enough to reach Doom.
Tom Taylor is quite skilled at subverting expectations with his more ambitious comic tales. While some moments are especially predictable, he's often able to subvert your expectations later down the line.
I won't go further than that here, lest I spoil the ending to both 'Old Woman Laura' and All-New Wolverine as a series. I will say that the ending to this series is a lot more warm and upbeat than I would have predicted.
Frankly, I'm fine with that. While I did criticize this story for its lack of self-reflection regarding its premise, there is something nice about things just turning out well in the end — something that is harder to believe in the real world these days. Plus, Laura deserves a happy ending.
The fact that Doctor Doom and Wolverine seem so familiar with one another is an odd sticking point. They aren't exactly rivals, nor have they had a lot of time around one another in the past. That's a relatively small complaint, but it did stick out.
Ramon Rosanas's artwork succeeds in crafting a finale that looks as good as it reads. The photorealistic yet simple style looks great, and it has a softness to it that fits the more upbeat and emotionally-driven nature of this comic. Nolan Woodard complements it with a brighter color palette, and the overall book triumphs in its visual aesthetic.
All-New Wolverine #35 finishes the series with a heartwarming finale that this series has earned. Its characters are charming and likable, the finale is tense and dramatic, and the visuals look good. This ending earns a recommendation. Check it out.
