America's Got Powers Got A Really Cool Ending (Spoiler-Free-Ish)
Tomorrow sees the publication of America's Got Powers #7. It's been a time coming. You might be advised to catch up on issues 1 to 6 tonight, in preparation.
Because the concluding issue does something rather interesting.
Up until now, we've had a power play, between those affected by powers, the government, the military, the media and those who wish to subvert what they see as an exploitative situation. Not unlike real reality TV. Okay, maybe not the military.
But that's what provides this semi-allegory with an edge, it's one readers of Superman Unchained right now will recognise. And this issue takes it up a further notch, even on issue 6's bombastic bombshells of death and destruction.
We've all been expecting Zero, the powered with no powers, to save the day and in issue 6, we saw exactly what his power was. But in issue 7, not only do we get some definition, but it totally flips what we think we've been reading all along.
I love a good pull back and reveal, especially when everything necessary to work out what was going on, was there in black and white. Or in America's Got Powers, star spangled colours. And yes, it's all there if you choose to see it. What creators Jonathan Ross and Bryan Hitch have achieved here, is to let nobody see it, until it's revealed to us.
It's the allegory of a teenager railing against one certain injustice, to be asked to think of the bigger picture. And then to actually see the bigger picture and have their mind mildly blown. Except on a far larger scale. And it ties is so very beautifully to the concept of the comic.
That's the storytelling trick America's Got Powers gets away with this week. So while you're picking up your Walking Dead, your Superman/Wonder Woman, your Rocket Girl, spare a thought for this action movie of a comic doing something as interesting as World's End.
Enjoy. Just dig out those six issues out first if you can… it all ties in.
Oh also, I understand Ross's new comic with Ian Churchill will be featured on ITV breakfast TV in the UK tomorrow. They asked if I could send over the poster image we ran a little while ago…
