Cheeseburger In Paradise: Jughead And Archie Jumbo Comics #25
The opening story "Child's Play" caught my eye immediately. While Dan Parent is the artist and writer, the story has a strong Rex W. Lindsay vibe to it. Personally I love it. It reminded me heavily of my childhood and I ate it up. The story is straightforward and cute. Archie is headed to perform on a children's television show, one that Jughead just happens to be a fan of.
What I love about Jughead is his unapologetic presentation of himself. He's 17 but isn't shy about loving cartoons and comics, as he will not let his inner child die. Archie invites Jughead to play drums on the show. Archie's acceptance and ultimate loyalty of his best friend is admirable. He isn't put off that Jughead still watches the show. In fact he almost celebrates it. It's this kind of acceptance that makes classic Archie completely timeless. Regardless of who you are you have a place in Riverdale.
Of course after this story we lead right into an actual Rex W. story, "The Taste Buds Who Knew Too Much". This story is heavy on the Jughead/Veronica dynamic. In it she sort of sticks up for him as the guys are shoveling food into Jughead's face (he doesn't mind) to see if he can guess what foods they're feeding him.
Veronica decides to get in on the action and asks her chef to make something that would even stump Jughead.
The rest of the digest offers a great variety of stories focusing on Jughead and Archie. They showcase the best of each character, I only wish they would include more new material as well!
