'Generations: Wolverine & All-New Wolverine' Review: A Touching Reunion
James "Logan" Howlett, aka the Wolverine, is in Japan on the hunt for his daughter, Akiko, but the Hand are stopping him at every turn. Thankfully for him, Laura Kinney, his genetic clone and the All-New Wolverine, is here to help. The two track Akiko through hordes of Hand assassins, eventually finding her in the hands of one of Logan's oldest and deadliest foes: the Sabretooth.
And it's freaking awesome. Tom Taylor has set up quite the reunion for this one. Seeing the two Wolverines tear through hordes of Hand ninja is the exact kind of fun I was hoping to see from this comic.
Laura and Logan have always made quite the duo. They're two people with claws and a barely suppressed animalistic rage that makes any bastard unlucky enough to stand in their way very, very sorry. They're the best at what they do.
Also, Logan jumps out of a plane onto Sabretooth to stab him repeatedly, and that's freaking awesome, too.
And, yet, this comic has a very sweet side. At the end, after all the death and mayhem, Wolverine (spoiler, I guess?) saves Akiko and tries to leave her, believing himself to be a danger. Laura stops him and gives him a lengthy speech about how important it is that he make Akiko and himself happy. He saved her, and he's not a danger to her. Logan, by this point, has figured out exactly who Laura is, and the two have a bonding moment that warms the heart. Logan asks her to stay, and that's when she begins to fade back to the present.
Okay, I'll get this one out of the way, because I'm sure some people are going to see it and be enraged. Logan admits in his thought captions that Laura is a better fighter than him. It's okay. It won't cause all of your issues of Wolverine catch fire. It doesn't mean that you have to hate Logan forever, or Laura for that matter. Frankly, I love both of these characters quite a bit. It's just a thing he says, and it kind of makes sense from a continuity standpoint. She's lighter, faster, and more graceful than he is. It's okay. They're both the best, if it makes you feel any better.
Ramon Rosana's artwork is really good here. The action is drawn expertly with a lot of blood and kinetic motion. The damage done to Laura and Logan is shown very well. Sabretooth looks like a beastly creature. It's all just great. Nolan Woodard supports it all well with a dynamic and contrasting color palette.
This is a very solid read. It has action, blood, and heart. People are butchered, reunions are had, and they show themselves to be the best there is at what they do, even if it's not pretty at all. Grab this one. You won't regret it.
