Ghost World Begins in Dan Clowes' Eightball #11, Up for Auction
Daniel Clowes got his start in comics contributing to Cracked magazine in 1985 and shortly after Fantagraphics published his Lloyd Llewellyn series. Since then he's become an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and has received Eisner, Harvey and Ignatz awards for comics and the PEN Award for literature. His most famous and acclaimed work has appeared in the series Eightball, which began in 1989. The Eightball series included a number of serialized stories over its run, among the most famous of which is Ghost World, which began in Eightball #11. The beginning of an award-winning and important comics story which was also adapted into a film, there's an Eightball #11 (Fantagraphics Books, 1993) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages up for auction in this week's 2022 February 20-21 Sunday & Monday Comic Books Select Auction #122208 at Heritage Auctions.
Ghost World follows the day-to-day lives of best friends Enid Coleslaw and Rebecca Doppelmeyer, two cynical, pseudo-intellectual, and intermittently witty teenage girls recently graduated from high school in the early 1990s. They spend their days wandering aimlessly around their unnamed American town, criticizing popular culture and the people they encounter while wondering what they will do for the rest of their days. Daniel Clowes's own life served as partial inspiration for the story. Ghost World was made into a 2001 movie directed by Terry Zwigoff and starring Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson, and Steve Buscemi. Eightball #11 is surprisingly difficult to get in CGC 9.8, with only four copies graded that by CGC and none higher, but there's an Eightball #11 (Fantagraphics Books, 1993) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages up for auction in this week's 2022 February 20-21 Sunday & Monday Comic Books Select Auction #122208 at Heritage Auctions.
