Gotham Academy Endgame #1: Spooky Joker Tales!

GalleryComics_1920x1080_20150401_GOTHACEG_Cv1_550cc71e341407.81422038Being a huge Gotham Academy fan, I couldn't wait to see what Gotham Academy: Endgame was all about. Like I mentioned last month, I haven't participated in reading much of the Endgame series. However, reading Batgirl: Endgame written by Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher, with art and colors by Bengal, was an incredibly impressive experience. I can honestly say that reading Gotham Academy: Endgame #1, from DC Comics, written by Becky Cloonan and Brenden Fletcher, with art by Jeff Stokely, and colors by Jenny Donovan was just as good.

We meet Olive, Maps, and Pomeline while they are on lockdown at Gotham Academy. To pass the time, the girls decide to exchange spooky stories about the Joker. Cloonan and Fletcher's script is an excellent base to the three separate stories that are told within the issue. Pomeline's Story, written and illustrated by Clio Chiang, tells the tale of a cryptic mask that put voices into a young boys head. MacPherson's Story, written and illustrated by Joy Ang, is about a performer who puts on a show that is troublesome for the audience, and Olive's Story, written and illustrated by Vera Brosgol, is a retelling of a story her mother told her about the "smiling man." It seems like that's a lot of separate things going on in one comic, but it flows really well.

As I read through them, not only was I engrossed in the freaky nature of it all, but I also felt transported into each individual characters mind. Having the different writers and artists working on each story allowed for an experience to connect with what things look and feel like for Olive, Professor MacPherson, and Pomeline. In true Maps fashion, she is incredibly enthralled by all of the stories, especially Olive's. Her sweet nature always adds a nice balance to the natural gloomy feel that the Academy can give off. Overall, I think it was an incredibly impressive issue. Even if you haven't read any of the other Endgame comics, I'm sure you'll still find Gotham Academy: Endgame #1 to be an enjoyable read.
