Grix and Vess Team up Against LUX in 'Invisible Kingdom' #3 (REVIEW)

Grix and Vess have finally met up, brought together over the schemes of LUX, a major corporation that controls just about everything that happens in deep space. The stakes are high for both woman, and they both find themselves on the outs with the organizations they had been recently bound to.

Grix is the captain of the Sundog, a freighter that was hauling cargo for the corporate giant. A recent accident caused Grix and her crew to run behind on their delivery, and now they're on the run from the company.

Vess recently became a None for the holy order of the Renunciation, a group of people who have given up all earthly connections to walk a path of virtue. Unfortunately for Vess, she uncovers a scheme in which LUX is sending illicit payments to Mother Proxima of the Renunciation, and that knowledge could be very dangerous for Vess to possess.

I think it would be really hard to write political intrigue into a science fiction comic while still keeping things fresh and thrilling. G. Willow Wilson manages this with ease, and I think the key to all of this is the sheer humanity of her characters in Invisible Kingdom. Grix may be a hardened space captain, but she's loyal to her crew, especially her little brother. Vess gave up everything she had on her home planet to become a None, but her sense of responsibility compels her to betray her order and try to bring their secrets to light.

There is something oddly compelling about Christian Ward's art that I can't quite put my finger on. His layouts are stunning, with rich, saturated colors that just pop off the page. His characters are expressive and lively, but if you really look at it all you can see how simple everything is. But if you look a little harder, you'll realize the genius of the art- there's nothing simple about it. It's like an odd fusion of Richard Corben and Fiona Staples respective styles, which results in a stunning book that looks unlike anything else on the market.
