NYCC: A Few Minutes With Garth Ennis About Rover Red Charlie

RoverRedCharlie-6-regOur Jake Barlow dropped by the Avatar Press booth at NYCC and managed to grab a few words with the one and only Garth Ennis (creator of PREACHER, THE BOYS & CROSSED) about his newest book ROVER RED CHARLIE: the story of three dogs who have to find their own way to survive in the world after witnessing the end of mankind.

BLEEDING COOL: So Garth, what's the inspiration for the book?

GARTH ENNIS: ROVER RED CHARLIE was inspired by an old painting that used to hang on the wall of my grandparent's kitchen and now hangs on the wall of my office. It's just head shots of three dogs. I think it was called "Faithful Friends", and I guess I waited 40 odd years to send them on an adventure. The other inspiration was when I figured out what dogs were saying when they barked.

BC: *laughs* Secondly, what was it like working with Michael Dipascale (the book's artist) and what input did he have in the crafting of the story, if any?

GE: Michael was a huge influence on the story. When I initially saw his dog designs – and maybe one day there will be a special edition and you'll be able to see his early art – they were bang on. I think as a dog owner and a guy who's around dogs, he really caught their mannerisms; he caught every little characteristic of them and that was absolutely vital.

BC: Finally, can you answer this: who's your favorite, Rover, Red or Charlie?

GE: *pauses* errrrrr…

BC: Is that like asking a father to choose between his children?

GE: Maybe Charlie.

BC: Really?

GE: Yeah, he's the thinker.

Many thanks to Garth for the short but sweet interview. The ROVER RED CHARLIE trade paperback is out now from Avatar Press."
