Lily Collins Will Hunt Demons In The Mortal Instruments After All, With Harald Zwart Directing
So, this isn't really news, per say, but more like a confirmation. Lily Collins had been cast in an adaptation of one of those "could be the next Twilight" potential franchises, The Mortal Instruments, over a year ago, but since then, there's been so much upheaval within the project – new writers being hired, actors and directors departing, Screen Gems dropping the option – that it seemed unclear for a long while whether the movie would ever really get started.
Well, wonder no more, Mortal Instruments fans (do we have a name for you yet?). Production companies Constantin Film and Unique Features announced today that Mirror Mirror star Collins will indeed play lead Clary Fray in the movie, and Harald Zwart of the recent Karate Kid reboot will step up to the director's chair after Scott Stewart departed in February. Even more evidence that the movie really will finally happen is news from original author Cassandra Clare, who said that the first movie, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones will begin shooting in Toronto on August 15th.
Oh, yes, there will be more than one. Thus far four books have been published, with another due out in May, and that's not counting prequels, sequels and spin-offs.
Collins' Clary is a young 15 year old girl who "discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons. After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures."
The male lead of the film, Jace Wayland, Clary's arrogant Shadowhunter love interest, had originally been earmarked for Harry Potter and Twilight star Jamie Campbell-Bower, but it looks like he is now out. Probably for the best. That kid was clearly way too franchise-greedy.
