A Noobs First Wrestling Event: Lauren Goes To WWE's Extreme Rules PPV.
Between 1989-2001 I was dedicated to watching wrestling every Monday night (then Thursday), and of course I watched every pay per view my dad ordered. Back then Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall, and Kevin Nash were my favorite wrestlers. I was livid when they lost, and overjoyed when they won. It was also the time when WWF and WCW would compete in the Monday night slot. Personally I always preferred WWF.
Of course I got older and lost interest. When I started writing for Bleeding Cool back in January, I noticed a good number of people here are wrestling fans. So, for the sake of wanting to know what was going on, I turned on a Monday Night Raw a few weeks ago. That night marked the return of Finn Balor, and me very aggressively hitting the "DVR EVERY MONDAY NIGHT" option on my Direct TV. I'm not ashamed to admit that my crush on Balor is why I came back into wrestling. He reminds me of Shawn Michaels in many ways, and he's just fun to watch and look at.
So with that I checked to see if WWE was heading my way, and sure enough they were! Extreme Rules was in Baltimore this past Sunday, and for $78 after Ticketmaster fees I was able to live out 8 year old me's dream of seeing wrestling live. My friend Dan offered to go with me, and so off we went to experience WWE live for the first time!
I was pleasantly surprised at how extremely friendly people were. It felt like a family event, and everyone was happy to be there. I talked to a lot of people about the "old" days of wrestling, about the new talent, and whatever else popped up. There was also a lot of kids. I'm used to being around kids (I do visit Disney World all the time), but they were the real heart of this show. I was in between kids in my row, and they all happily told me who the best wrestlers were, why I was wrong for liking Nia Jax, and they were arguably the most enthusiastic people in the audience!
WWE puts on one helluva family friendly show. Sure, belts changed that night, but the blood and gore I remember from my childhood was gone, even with the steel cage match. It was over the top, and every superstar put their heart into their matches. And yea, I freaked out when Finn Balor came out, and while it was disappointing that he didn't win, oh my God, what an experience. I'll absolutely splurge on ring side seats for my next event!
Also EXTREME PRO TIP: DO NOT have the volume turned up for this video. I am 100% shrieking when Finn Balor comes out. Yea I am that person, and unless you wanna go deaf don't have the volume up. You've been warned.
