The Heart and Soul of a Crossed Epic: An Avatar Plug

I'm not just saying it because I have to.  I truly do believe that the Crossed epic known as Wish You Were Here is crafted with more heart and soul than most other comics on the market.  I'm going to tell you why.  Nay, I'll show you why…

The Heart and Soul of a Crossed Epic: An Avatar Plug

See that guy on the left there? That's Si Spurrier, the writer. And sure, there's a ton of hungry young creators out there, willing to whatever it takes to get their name, or their products, out there. Si's extremely enthusiastic portrayal of a Crossed maniac (with some giddy friends at Orbital Comics earlier this year) shows that he's got commitment to the work and its related shenanigans. That's a plus, but I think it goes deeper than that.

If you've been following the series online (or reading about it here at Bleeding Cool), you know that the main character is displaced comic book writer nicknamed Shaky (short for "Shakespeare"). The world's been overrun by murderers and rapists, the cities turned to slaughterhouses.  A person out of place in a world built on survival, Shaky struggles to find a place among his fellow islanders, all of whom appear better suited to contributing to their meager society than him.

Yes, Spurrier is writing about himself, or a fictional version of himself. But really think about that — in a landscape as bleak as Crossed, where it's hopeless, our author has to consistently put himself into that grueling, gory mess. I know there's some really dark places he goes in the story… but imagine what dark places he goes in his head for the sake of the next chapter! It's not enough to dream up new horrors and atrocities. Somewhere inside his brain… he's making himself experience it.  Talk about suffering for your art!  In my opinion, that makes Wish You Were Here a work worthy of respect… and multiple reads!

So if you're a Crossed fan, a horror fan, a Spurrier fan, or heck, just a Little Bleeder finally coming around to checking out one of my tirades online for the first time, I encourage you to get in touch with your local comic shop and reserve a copy of the upcoming Crossed: Wish You Were Here Vol. 1 graphic novel! It'll be a colorful addition to your bookshelf.

More information can be found here.  Oh, and here's more Spurrier wackiness, just for kicks…
