Spirou Magazine, 75 Years Young Today

spirou3914-01You probably know that this week is the 75th anniversary of Action Comics #1, the anthology comic that featured  the first appearance of Superman by Joe Siegel and Jerry Shuster. But today is also the 75th anniversary of Spirou magazine, the leading French comics anthology that featured work including Spirou, Lucky Luke, the Smurfs and XIII.

The have published a hundred page edition to celebrate (which can be squinted it in full, here).

Intriguingly, Superman was first published in Belgium in Spirou magazine, renamed "Marc, Hercule moderne". A modern day Hercules called Marc. Even though he had that big S on his shirt.

Also, during Nazi occupation, the magazine suddenly lost access to their Superman strips, and so the story they were printing had to be finished off in an exquisite corpse fashion by newcomer comic creator Jijé, who would later become the teacher of Franquin and Moebius.
