Bioware's New IP Has Been Pushed Back, So We Have To Ask, What Are They Even Working On?

In their quarterly earnings call to discuss the end of Fiscal year 2016, EA revealed that Bioware's mysterious new project, based on an entirely original intellectual property, has been delayed to release during the 2019 fiscal year.

We still don't have many details about that IP, though rumors have it that we're getting a Sci-Fi pseudo MMO like Destiny, but we were told back in January that the game would be coming out before March of 2018. Looks like now it'll hit any time from April 2019 to March of 2020. That's… kind of a major setback, though EA gave few details on the delay.

Their full statement was, "We're very pleased with the progress of our new action IP from BioWare," courtesy of EA's CEO Andrew Wilson during the earnings call. "We decided to add more to the disruptive new social design for our players."

Because this is Bioware, it isn't really surprising that their new IP is going to take them longer than they'd anticipated. Mass Effect: Andromeda sat in Game Development Hell for 5 years. I won't be surprised if this game takes until March 2020, though I don't think it will be allowed to remain in Dev Hell much longer than that.

Combining this setback with the rumors of Bioware Austin working on a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and no news of a Dragon Age 4, and it's starting to look like Bioware might have a problem. Considering EA isn't bringing any possible Bioware titles to E3 again this year – their E3 slate is pretty slim with Star Wars: Battlefront II, FIFA 18, Madden 18, and Need for Speed. And with all the problems from Andromeda sitting over them like a massive flaming Hindenberg even though they just put the entire series on hold, it looks our darling little character-driven studio is in some trouble. As I mentioned in my earlier Andromeda report, the likely culprit for much of this is Star Wars: Battlefront II, but you do have to wonder how that's affected the new IP. Just what is going on over at Bioware these days?

But hey, at least this new project won't ever be Kingdom Hearts 3 because we'll probably get to play it at some point. (Cue uncontrollable sobbing).
