Firestorm Joins The Cast Of Injustice 2

The latest character reveal out of NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment's Injustice 2 is Firestorm. Before you comics fans get too happy about seeing a lower-listing Justice Leaguer on the roster, this Firestorm is a combination of Jason Rusch and Martin Stein, who "are only beginning to master their abilities," according to the developer. CW fans will recognize Firestorm here, as the character looks quite a bit like the Firestorm we see in DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Though they are not the same Firestorm.

This now opens us up to the possibility of seeing characters from other CW shows make their way into Injustice. Arrow's Green Arrow or Red Arrow (both Thea Queen or Roy Harper) would be fun to see, and I'd greatly enjoy playing as John Barrowman's Malcom Merlyn. Who wouldn't?

Here however, the Nuclear Man clearly has a bit of a case of dissociative identity disorder (the fancy new name for multiple-personality disorder or split-personality disorder according to the current edition of the DSM V – or the actual name for whatever was going on with Charles Xavier in Split). NetherRealm has decided to capture that dual nature with two different colors of flames. Red and blue.

For those not in the know, don't worry, the basic primer on Firestorm is rather simple despite the alter personalities. This current Firestorm is a combination of two previous incarnations of the character. Jason Rusch was a 17-year-old Detroit native who wanted nothing more than to escape his abusive father and wound up a courier for a local gang. During one of his runs, he ran into the Firestorm Matrix and became the hero Firestorm. Martin Stein is the original (chronologically based on publication date) Firestorm and has a simpler backstory – he was caught in a nuclear explosion that left him with superpowers. The CW version of Firestorm is actually a new character, but one who happens to look a hell of a lot like Injustice 2's Jason Rusch/ Martin Stein hybrid character.

Firestorm here is Jefferson "Jax" Jackson – but you see the resemblance to the Injustice 2 Firestorm right? It's not just me?

Okay, so I lied, Firestorm is not an easy one to pin down because so many have been Firestorm and so many have shared the name Firestorm with multiple personas inhabiting one character. That's a fun Wikipedia page if you've got a few hours to click-hole your way through it.

Naturally, Firestorm is going to be a favorite of pyromaniacs everywhere, and plays a bit like Injustice's Raven and Sinestro, if they'd had some sort of hideous Cadmus test-tube clone. But that's alright, because hey, the character looks fun to play and that's the make-or-break for Injustice. If it's not fun, why play it tends to be the rule with fighters and despite all the "story" they keep throwing at us, Injustice has never been about anything more than watching DC characters rip one another to shreds. All in good fun, yeah?

Firestorm is the 27th character to join the Injustice 2 ranks of playable characters. Green Lantern was the last, and we've still got a ways to go before the game launches. So, I'm sure we've got plenty of reveals yet to come.

The gameplay reveal trailer for Firestorm is below.
