Little Lords Of Twilight Review: It's Actually Kind Of Fun
BKOM Studios' Little Lords of Twilight released this week for iOS, Android, and Steam. And, honestly, it's actually kind fun to play despite being the same old turn-based strategy RPG that we've seen on mobile platforms a ton of times. I've honestly lost track of the number of times I've played a mobile game with a movement grid and turn phases, because it feels like that's every other mobile RPG.
The game's tutorial is skippable, and I'll be honest, you don't really need it. Granted, once you get past the first stage you are free to go forth and enter PVP matchmaking to your hearts content. Or you can sit through any one of the close to 20 tutorials. Yeah. I stopped counting after 12.
One of the problems I ran into with this was attempting to link the game to any social media account. Not that you necessarily want to do that, but some people like the connectivity. And while I could log in to my social accounts to go ahead and link the game, the request just would not process regardless of the number of attempts or strategies to get that working. But connectivity in general was a problem. I had mutliple opponents DC in matchmaking and while in matches. I DC'd a few times myself and I was at home, on my working Wi-Fi network.
Really, the game feels kind of lazy. The currency is called "madblings," your magic is actually "madzik," and the whole thing just feels like a plug and play formula.
Not that the game is bad. It isn't broken, just a bit unstable. Its playable, and while the matchmaking isn't well balanced – my n00b self got consistently matched with mor experienced players with better abilities – it isn't so imbalanced that the game is unplayable.
And just because it doesn't stand out as amazing doesn't mean Little Lords of Twilight is a bad game. The Day-Night mechanic is cute, and it is a solid strategy game that's simple enough to work well on mobile platforms.
Little Lords of Twilight is actually kind of fun to play. I just wouldn't call it spectacular.
