The Nintendo World Championships Are Returning In October

Big news for those looking to show off their gaming prowess as Nintendo has brought back the Nintendo World Championships this year to take place in New York City. The series started in 1990 and has only gained affection from Nintendo lovers around the world (as well as collectors looking for those expensive cartridges). The company brought it back in 2015, featuring a mix of pro-gamers, regular Joe's, and Let's Player celebrities competing for top honors. Now the next championships are open to the public, with qualifier matches beginning next weekend.

The disappointing news about this is that if you want to qualify, you'll need to make a long trip as they're only holding eight qualifying matches and they're only happening in seven states in America. They are New York, California (two events), Illinois, Texas, Minnesota, Florida, and Washington. Qualifying weekend matches will happen between August 19 to September 10, with the championships happening at the Manhattan Center on October 7. I remember watching the competitions and fallout from the 2015 tournament, and the excitement about it as people were watching a real competition held by Nintendo. Unlike a lot of tournaments where it would be easy to predict who you'll see at the end, this is set up for anyone to take part, so there's a good chance you'll see a complete unknown player emerge victorious.
