Todd Howard Doesn't Want to Remaster Morrowind
Bethesda's Todd Howard has spoken up about the possibility of Morrowind seeing a remaster and it is not encouraging news if you were holding out for a version.
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind remains a classic for many fantasy RPGs fans. While Skyrim is easily the most popular and recreated game in the franchise, like the cool kids claiming they were there before it was cool, Morrowind still has a large and passionate fanbase. In a lot of ways, it was the game that created the model for modern Bethesda RPGs that are so popular today. That's why it's not rare to see a huge group of people asking for a remaster of the game.
Well, if you are one such person, you should maybe cool your hopes. Speaking to The Guardian, Bethesda's Todd Howard has somewhat dashed hopes that the game could see a re-do, saying he prefers the game as it is now. He also spoke of his preference for having the game as backwards compatible, rather than remastered. He said:
I'm really happy that Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and others are making it easier for people to play [older games] as they were played at the time. I actually prefer that over remasters. I'd rather you play Morrowind the way it was … I think the age is part of its identity. For something like Morrowind, my personal preference is not to remaster it.
He's not wrong about the age of a game being a part of its identity. The game might cease to feel like Morrowind if its DNA was changed significantly. That game was so important for the company, that age punctuates the milestone it was. I absolutely get this logic, even if it means some fans might be upset.
