New Reports On The Rumoured PlayStation 4.5 Surface

There has been rumour talk for the last week or so about an upgraded PlayStation 4 hitting the market, that would be capable of 4k gaming. Sony have been schtum about the possibility, but the rumours are being supported with new confirmations hitting.

One such confirmation comes from The Wall Street Journal (via GameSpot) has now joined the rumour train, by saying that their sources also say this more powerful console is getting made. On the console, they said:

Existing PlayStation 4 owners would need to buy the new model to take full advantage of the enhanced graphics and power. Though it is likely that the current model and the coming one would share the same software catalog.

The report also says this new power will allow for the PlayStation VR to perform better. As it stands, the PlayStation 4 is seriously under-powered compared to the PCs that are needed to run the Vive and Oculus Rift. This would in theory step up the power of Sony's devices to bring it more in line with those other headsets.

This seems like a dangerous strategy by Sony. With the popularity of PC gaming rising and the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 already being out-speced by even modest PCs just two years into a console cycle, I can understand it. But this move does stick it to those who have already bought a PlayStation 4, especially those recently, and could fragment a player base. That is a risky move. Yet, it seems like it's happening, and it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
