Shenmue 3's Crowdfunding Campaign Capped at Over $7 Million

Shenmue 3's Crowdfunding Campaign Capped at Over $7 Million

The Kickstarter campaign for Shenmue 3 has ended with a grand total of $7,179,510 USD from exactly 81,087 backers. This is in addition to the original 2015 Kickstarter campaign's $6,333,295 USD which made the game the most funded project on the crowdfunding platform at that point.

Despite the success, series creator Yu Suzuki was not content with the raised funds and looked for other ways to fund the project. His reasoning for needing additional backing was to make Shenmue 3 live up to his grand vision. He even reopened the initial Kickstarter through Paypal for a "slacker backer" period.

This latest campaign ended with the following message from Suzuki himself:

Quite an impressive score, isn't it!? Seeing the final numbers, all of us here can't help but feel all over again the immensity of the support everyone has given to make this project come true! Thank you!

There are now less than 10 months left until the release date on August 27, 2019! Everyone on the team is giving it all they got every day in the run-up to the release, and we hope we can continue to count on your support.

And in a closing note…

More than 80% of you have answered the now-closed surveys. Development of rewards based on survey responses is now underway! Thank you all very much for your answers!!

Shenmue 3 is going to be the third installment in the series since it began in 1999. The first and second games were remastered and re-released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC earlier this year.

Publisher Deep Silver announced the game's release date back during Gamescom, so we know Shenmue 3 is slated to release on August 27, 2019 for PS4 and PC.
