Sony Won't Tolerate VR Games That Don't Run At 60FPS
VR is a pretty radical experience that I'm genuinely excited about. It's a powerful tool that really does add something to the process of playing games…on the other hand, I've also been moved to sickness by bad experiences too.
That knife edge of great and awful exists in refresh rates, fps and latency. That's why Sony are being very careful with what they let onto the headset. Gamasutra report the Sony Engineer Chris Norden has said that 60 is the fps bar for Sony on all the games coming to the device. He said in a talk during GDC:
Frame rate is really important; you cannot drop below 60 frames per second, ever. If you submit a game to us and it drops to 55, or 51…we're probably going to reject it.
While this may seem harsh, it does show that Sony really do only want excellent experiences on their device. That is encouraging, especially as it's certainly the most 'mainstream focused' of the high end headsets. It would be good if we didn't have everyone feeling queasy in their living rooms as their first VR Experience.
