[CinemaCon 2019] Legendary Brings Godzilla: King of the Monsters Sneak Peak and a Detective Pikachu Chip
Warner Bros. might have horror and they might have DC but they also have Legendary putting out some great material as well. There are two big Legendary movies that were presented in front of the crowd at CinemaCon.
When Legendary and Warner Bros. first announced their intentions to do a Detective Pikachu movie, no one thought it was going to turn out to be any good. Did anyone imagine a reality where it could be? It turns out there very much is and it's this one. The trailers have all looked fantastic so far and Warner Bros. started off the presentation by showing a holographic Pikachu, as voiced by Ryan Reynolds, cracking a few jokes including one saying that Jeff Goldstein, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, was also a hologram and hadn't actually attended CinemaCon in ten years. Then he "introduced" a new clip from the movie.
It is the interrogation of Mr. Mime that we have seen in a lot of the trailers. We get to the point where Pikachu jumps into the invisible wall and we move onto new footage. They try to get Mr. Mime to talk but he isn't giving them anything. Tim (Justice Smith) believes that they need to try a different approach. As Mr. Mime sit in an invisible chair behind an invisible wall Tim "opens" the door and begins to mime dumping something on Mr. Mime. It's supposed to be gasoline, Pikachu comments that things got dark fast, as Tim tries to mime lighting a match. They eventually get the information out of Mr. Mime but appear to accidentally send the "match" into the glass house. It cut to black before we could see if we're going to have to watch Mr. Mime mime being burned alive.
The other big Legendary movie this year is Godzilla: King of the Monsters. We got what appeared to be a sneak peek, and it shows how Ghidorah gets woken up. We heard that there are monsters attacking and no one seems to know why. Does it seem to imply that there are more monsters running around rather than the four that we know about? Or maybe they are referring to Mothra and Rodan. Regardless, it's beginning to look like Vera Farmiga's Dr. Emma Russell might be a bad guy here. She appears to be the one who wakes up Ghidorah and he breaks through the ice. He crawls slowly up through the blown up ice and eventually stands tall over the evacuating soldiers. He unleashes the yellow gravity beam [correct me if that's not what it is called Godzilla stans] and kills them all.
He's about to attack a retreating chopper when blue appears from underneath the ice and Godzilla breaks free using his Atomic Breath. The next thing we see is the two of them facing off from the trailers and they begin to fight. We see snippets of other footage like Mothra and Rodan fighting, we see a pilot ejecting himself from a plane directly into the monster's mouth. "They move like a pack. If we stop him we stop them all." There is no telling which monster that is exactly talking about. We see a few more brief snippets of footage but that implication that Dr. Russell is unleashing the titans as a way to cleanse the Earth is an interesting angle. She might be our villain.
Both Detective Pikachu and Godzilla: King of the Monsters open next month.
