The Elder Scrolls: Online has long been marred by its restrictive subscription model that's meant players have had to pay a huge premium for content. The buy-in price was big to start off with and that was on top of an expensive online subscription. There was no way it was going to stay sustainable for too long.
Bethesda have been posturing the MMO for free to play of late, and now that announcement has come to pass. The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited was announced today, with news that the game was going to be free-to-buy. The title will have a retail price, but will no longer require a monthly subscription. The game will adopt the subscription free model on March 17th for PC players.
The long talked about console version has reared its head again finally too. That version has been silent for quite a while, which is significant because it was announced before the PC version even came out. The game will launch on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on June 9th, so get ready to jump in.
You will still be able to pay for a subscription if you want to, which will make you an ESO Plus member, giving you special content every month.
I'm interested to see how the game does now that the main barrier for entry is out of the way. I enjoyed what brief time I've spent with the title. I hope it does well. I'd love to see it take off.
