Gearbox Want To Make A New Borderlands Game, But Need To Recruit First
There were a bunch of stories floating around the internet over the weekend that Borderlands 3 was going to be announced at PAX South or that an announcement was coming soon. I didn't cover it because…well, it's a non-story. News that there might be news that their might be a game is always a tricky one, and none of it clicked with me.
Turns out my instinct was right…sort of. Intent to create a new game in the Borderlands franchise has been expressed by Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford, but it doesn't look like any work has been done on it yet. In fact, Gearbox are actively looking for help to create it.
During a PAX South panel via IGN, Pitchford said:
We want to think about the future and we want to think about what the next Borderlands is and we're going to need some help.
The fact is, we're not working on a new Borderlands game, but we want to.
He added:
There's literally nothing to tell, but we're ready to start.
I'd guess this means the next Borderlands game, be it 3 or another spin off like the Pre-Sequel, is at the very least two years off. Possibly even three or four. That is a little surprising as I thought Gearbox would be rushing to get their tentpole franchise onto new-gen consoles with an original title.
This is probably a good sign that the developer is taking their time with the game though and that is always good news.
