'Hamilton' Coming to Theaters With Original Cast For One Night Only, in 2021
Hamilton, the runaway, hugely successful Broadway musical from Lin-Manuel Miranda, is coming to theaters for one night only. In partnership with Disney, the one night theatrical event will feature the original Broadway cast reprising their roles. The filming will take place at The Richard Rogers Theatre on Broadway, home to the show since its opening in July 2015. The announcement was made by Miranda himself on Twitter this morning.
Hamilton is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway, Hamilton has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theater- a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. With book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, direction by Thomas Kail, choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler, and musical supervision and orchestrations by Alex Lacamoire, Hamilton is based on Ron Chernow's acclaimed biography. It has won Tony, Grammy, and Oliver Awards, the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and an unprecedented special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors.
This is fantastic. Why make an inferior film version of the show when you can just reunite the cast and air it as it was meant to be seen? My guess is that this is not just shown once in theaters and becomes available on Blu-ray and Disney+ and wherever else they can market it and sell it. Hamilton is such a cultural landmark, and so many of us were not lucky enough to see it with that iconic original cast…this is the best kind of announcement.
Hamilton, with the original Broadway cast, will be in theaters one night only on October 15th, 2021.
