How To Keep The Creative Fire Burning – From Phil Mendez

How To Keep The Creative Fire Burning – From Phil MendezLate last year, Hong Kong Phooey animator Phil Mendez talked to the new graduates of The Art Institute of California – Los Angeles during about how to "keep the creative fire burning".

Keynote speaker for their summer/fall commencement ceremony held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel. Mendez addressed more than 1000 art school students, faculty and guests – including the graduates of the  Media Arts & Animation program.

And here are a few notes… if you too want to be a number one super guy.

    • The first thing is very simple: Love what you love. Don't give up that love.
    • Creatively, do things you want to do. If you are the creators, you're the ones who set everything up.
    • Cooperate amongst yourselves. You now have a brotherhood [at The Art Institute]…Share what you have amongst yourself. Don't be like the old generation. Where I come from it was: mine! My Precious!  It's not. Everything is there for us to use and create.
    • You must forget the past, as far as its negatives are concerned.  We must know history. We must know where we come from, but… Go, have fun. And be who you are.

To underscore his last point, he paused to bring out his sketch book. "Some [art work and concepts] never see the light of day. But I work. Every day. I love what I do. Love what you do. Love it. And you will be successful."

The Art Institutes (www.artinstitutes.edu) is a system of more than 45 educational institutions located throughout North America and provide an important source for design, media arts, fashion and culinary arts professionals.
