Michael Fassbender To Star In And Co-Produce Assassin's Creed: The Movie
There's still quite a wait between now and the October release of Assassin's Creed III, so while us Brits debate whether or not there's something unpatriotic about whacking Redcoats in the face with a tomahawk, here's some news regarding the move of the franchise to the big screen.
Actor Michael Fassbender and creative partner Conor McCaughan have begun developing movie scripts through their company DMC Film, and as their first feature will be co-producing an adaptation of the Assassin's Creed games, one of Ubisoft's most popular franchises. Ubisoft were originally in talks to produce the Assassin's Creed film(s) through Sony, but have since decided to revert to their original plan of releasing them independently.
For those not familiar with the series, Assassin's Creed is the story of a bartender called Desmond Miles who is kidnapped by a shady corporation and forced to relive the memories of his 12th century ancestor, Ataïr Ibn-La'Ahad. Ataïr was an Assassin who happily stabbed his way to the truth with a big sword and a cool hood, using the unstoppable power of R-trigger+X (counter-attack). The first game is set during the Crusades, the second and third in Renaissance Italy, and the fourth in Constantinople (with an occasional return to the Middle East). Assassin's Creed III will be the fifth in the series; I think Douglas Adams must have been on the creative team somewhere.
According to Variety, Fassbender will also star in the film, presumably in one of the key roles. All's fair in love and casting, so it's possible he'll end up as Altaïr or one of the other Israeli characters, as Miles himself, as 12th century bad guy Robert De Sable or as modern antagonist Warren Vidic. That's presuming the film will be based on the first game; the franchise as a whole has a cast of thousands.
The film is still in the early stages of development, but face/voice actors that may return include Kristen Bell and British writer/comic Danny Wallace.
