More Developments On The D&D Front From Twitter
By Christopher Helton
Yesterday I reported about the new edition of D&D coming out this summer from Wizards of the Coast. If you read that piece you'll remember that I posted a tweet from Mike Mearls, the head of Wizards' R&D team for D&D:
Lots of questions about character creation and the starter set – you will definitely be able to make characters when it comes out.
— Mike Mearls (@mikemearls) May 19, 2014
Now, somewhat confusingly Mearls is saying the opposite:
To clear up the Starter Set – it's aimed at DMs, so no PC creation in the box. But players will be able to make characters without it.

For a DM running the starter set, there will be pregens to hand out. Players who want to make characters will be able to do so.

This is a bit confusing. It has also lead to speculation online that there will be a character builder, or some access to the rules outside of the game. For most people this has lead to talk of a System Reference Document like Wizards of the Coast released for Dungeon & Dragons Third Edition. Either way it is a bit confusing. No tweets from Mearls have been deleted (yet) but it makes you wonder about the online reversal. And with only a few months lead up to the release of the Starter Set, the first product in the new D&D line, it makes you wonder how they are planning on selling this to the masses.
