Russia Is Getting A Free To Play PC Halo Game
All of this is pretty odd, so we are going to work through this together.
Microsoft today announced that a Free-to-Play PC only Halo game was coming to Russia. It's called Halo Online and is set to come out this Spring. Kanobu.ru (via Gematsu) claim the game will run on a modified version of the Halo 3 engine as it's designed to work on low end PCs. It will include classic weapons and vehicles, as well as fan favorite maps alongside new ones.
The game is being developed by Halo: The Master Chief Collection helmers Saber Interactive. Addressing if there was any chance that the title would come out in other area's, a Halo Waypoint blog post explained:
Right now our focus is on learning as much as we can from the closed beta period in Russia. Theoretically, any expansion outside of Russia would have to go through region-specific changes to address player expectations.
Alright, so this idea isn't entirely new as Call of Duty: Online launched in China in January. This seems to work in a similar fashion. There's obviously a foreign market for PC based Free-to-Play first person shooters. If this is at all successful for Microsoft, I don't think it would be long until we saw this spread to new testing grounds like China and other European countries.
I just couldn't see it taking off in the US or UK though, so I wouldn't expect to see this over on our shores any time soon.
