The Flash returns after its midseason break with an episode entitled Potential Energy. The episode features another comic villain brought to the screen, relationship angst, family angst and trying to like the guy who looks exactly like your former homicidal boss but who happens to be from another dimension angst. Let's take a look at the six important moments from last night.

  1. 1 – The series is going through a 'Doom and Gloom and Zoom' phase where Barry Allen should be having the time of his life with this wonderful new relationship with Patty Spivot, but instead he is so afraid she will become a pawn in the battle with Zoom that he is sabotaging it. And though everyone seems to advice him to be honest with her, when he has the chance he doesn't tell her. Not during the art exhibit when the villain strikes… but after when they are standing in her apartment and she puts down the ultimatum. He decides to keep her out. Everything after that is just the fallout of his decision.

2 – So what does Wally West want? He says he didn't come to Central City to meet his father or try to build a relationship with him. That comes from the way he talks to Joe West after the street race. But there are a lot of different cities he could have gone to to race. So is Wally just emotionally confused or is he playing at something? He obviously wants something, whether that is a relationship with his father, closure or something else remains to be seen.

3 – Caitlin Snow would be the most intense stalker ever. She offers to help Jay Garrick get his speed back and he declines. So after they share a brief romantic moment, she gets his DNA off of his glass and runs it to discover that Jay is dying. But he said no to the help, so why did she do it anyway? There is this odd arc that seems to be going on this season with her wanting to push people towards powers. She acted similar when finding the new second half for Firestorm. This might play out as something bigger later on.

4 – Oh, and there was actually a villain in this episode too; the Turtle. A guy who can slow down time which makes it seem like he's moving fast. This is one of Cisco Ramon's minor metas that he hasn't bothered the Flash with yet. People he has theories about but they haven't done anything significant yet. The Turtle was more of a theory but Cisco was right and he could be the key to stopping Zoom. Or he could be something Geoff Johns is snickering about: "I actually got them to use the Turtle."

5 – Before the break Harry Wells promises Zoom he will help him steal the Flash's speed as long as Jessie is safe. So we return with that ticking time bomb in place. But he continues to work on a way to defeat Zoom or at least he says and his frustration leads to Cisco suggesting the Turtle as an option. By the end of the episode he is stilling blood (or something) from the Turtle to use. But is he planning on using it against Zoom or against the Flash?

6 – And of course the moment that the Reverse-Flash suddenly appears at the end. I'm starting to wonder if Barry can still call himself the Fastest Man Alive when there are multiple speedsters running around.

This is a big storyline and a lot of fun to follow. But I'm homing we can get out of the Doom and Gloom and Zoom soon and get back to some of the fun that makes The Flash one of my favorite shows on television.

Speaking of Reverse-Flash, he is the extended trailer for next weeks episode.
