Swallowing The Bob's Burgers Panel In One, At New York Comic Con

As I waited for the cast of Bob's Burgers to arrive on stage, I realized the show was entering its 5th season. Could the Belchers continue past the lifespan of most live action sitcoms? If the fellowship of the cast and creator is any indication, I believe they could go another five years.

The panel began with a highlight reel from the last four years and ended with a near full cast on stage: Loren Bouchard (Creator), Kristen Schaal (Louise Belcher), Eugene Mirman (Gene Belcher), H. John Benjamin (Bob Belcher), Bobby Tisdale (Zeke), Larry Murphy (Teddy), and John Roberts (Linda Belcher). Sadly, the voice and soul of Tina, Dan Mintz, could not make it but fear not! A 7ft costumed Tina had been procured to fill the void.

Bouchard began by asking the crew what their dream piece of merchandise would be for the show. Answers were given, but all in joke form which set the tone for the panel. We were then treated to 3 clips from the upcoming season where Linda becomes a blonde, Bob paints an elderly woman in the nude, and the kids shop at a pretentious organic food shop. The last one was my personal favorite as it featured Andy Daly of TV's Review and Comedy Bang Bang!. When the lights went up, Bouchard teased the audience with three new holiday themed shows this year, and the reveal of Bob Belcher's father. Speculation on who will voice papa Belcher began immediately.

The Q+A portion of the panel began earlier than usual on the main stage, but it was welcomed with such comedic minds present. A question was asked about fluid gender and age on the show and Bouchard explained a lot of that comes from casting opposites (adults as children, men as women). I was shocked to learn the show was in development for 2 years before airing. It was such a delay, Schaal and Mirman had nearly forgotten about the project. Bouchard said that it's a simpler creative process to cast first and then write for the actor. The questions continued, with many of the audience in costumes from the show. The highlight was a Jimmy Jr. impersonator who's interpretive danced inspired both Benjamin and the costumed Tina on stage. We learned that a soundtrack of the show will be released, Bouchard is just not sure when. It was revealed that there are actual Bob's Burgers around the globe (including a chain in Brazil) but Bouchard approximated the fictional town in the show to a NY/NJ/Coney Island type of place.

After going over an hour, the panelists thanked the audience profusely, and asked them to continue watching the show on broadcast to "keep the train running". A fun and friendly panel, but what else would you expect from such a show?
