The Six Important Moments From Gotham – All Happy Families Are Alike

*** This article contains spoilers for the season finale of Gotham ***

Last night we got the season finale of Gotham and it was kind of strange. We had a big gang war raging between Carmine Falcone and Sal Maroni all started by Oswald Cobblepot… while Leslie Tompkins and Barbara Keen had a nice little chat in her apartment and Bruce Wayne and Alfred Pennyworth searched the mansion. It seemed a bit disjointed like the crime war was only happening in part of the city nowhere near the other characters. Here are the six important moments from the episode:

1) The war has begun and the police department has switched to Maroni's side, leaving Falcone vulnerable to a hit. He survives it but is left in the hospital for Maroni's men. Penguin shows up first, admits to having set the whole thing up and announces his intentions of taking over all of Gotham. He then moves in to kill Falcone when Jim Gordon shows up to stop him. This is the type of thing that is the Penguin's undoing. He could have stayed at his club or found a safe house while all of this was happening and dealt with what was left after it quieted down. Instead he jumped in to basically brag about how smart he is and winds up almost getting killed.

2) Gordon comes to Falcone's rescue because he realizes that as bad as Falcone is, he is the best of the bad options. And if there is any chance of stopping the gang war, Gordon has to help Falcone get back into power. The problem is that there are more players on the board than anyone expects. The rescue goes south, there are lots of gunfire and Harvey Bullock gets involved.

3) Barbara is still recovering from her experience with The Ogre and agrees to trauma counseling if it's with Leslie. They go back to Barbara's apartment where Leslie tries very hard to keep things on topic but Barbara keep asking about her and Jim. Eventually she finally talks about what happened and admits that she is the one who stabber her parents, not The Ogre. She then pulls a knife and tries to kill Leslie. This leads to a chase around the apartment, a few broken doors and Leslie pounding Barbara's head into the floor. So I'm thinking Barbara is NOT all right.

4) Completely out of left field we get the return of Fish Mooney. Last we saw of her she had been shot escaping from the Dollmaker's island in a helicopter. Now she has a gang, a new look and is set up in Falcone's safe house. She also has Selina Kyle at her side. We never got to see how any of this happens. But now she gets the drop on Gordon and friends. She then calls in Maroni who is grateful for the gift but patronizes her until she shoots him in the head. The two gangs start shooting it out and after a false start, Gordon and Bullock get Falcone out of there and Penguin goes after Fish.

5) They take Falcone to Barbara's apartment… I'm thinking because they don't want to build another set this season… just as the fight between the two women ends. There is a scene on the balcony that mirrors the pilot. Falcone told Gordon that the city needed the mobster to keep order. Now, in the season finale Falcone tells Gordon the city doesn't need a mobster any more, it needs a lawman. He give Gordon his knife, the same one that Gordon's father had given the mobster. Its a symbolic passing of the torch as Falcone is going to leave town and retire. I thought the mob keeps pulling you back in?

6) We get the showdown between Fish and Penguin and we see that both of them are vicious. His comic appearance makes you forget that Oswald is a killer. But the two beat each other up on the rooftop until Butch Gilzeen comes along and by being conflicted by his 'training' as opposed to his love for Fish… he ends up shooting both of them. This gives Penguin the opportunity to throw Fish to her apparent death. He then stands on the edge of the roof and shouts how he's king of Gotham. I'm sure all of that is going to work out just fine too.

Bonus) Edward Nygma only gets a minute or two of air time this week, but it's quite the moment. Mrs Kringle has figured out the clue he'd left in the fake note and then we basically watch as he has a psychotic break manifesting almost another personality that questions why he had to leave a clue and that the only way to win Kringle's heart is to make her afraid of him. Edward has just about left the building and the Riddler is taking over.

So we have the potential of a new status quo in Gotham that switches from mobsters to sociopaths and the police have someone to lead them away from corruption. Now we just have to wait until September to see what happens next.
