The Disney Streaming Service Price Will Be "Substantially Below Where Netflix Is"

There was a Disney earnings call today and while the big news about it was the announcement that Rian Johnson is creating his own trilogy of Star Wars movies and a bunch of new TV news there was also some news about the Disney streaming service. The Wrap got some quotes from Bob Iger talking about the streaming service and even touched on the price.

"Our plan on the Disney side is to price this substantially below where Netflix is," said Iger on the company's Q4 earnings call. "That is in part reflective of the fact it'll have less volume," added Disney's top executive.

Netflix, for those of you who don't know, runs between $7.99 to $13.99 currently. We're talking a price point of $5 or less a month for this service. That's pretty cheap but it doubles the amount of people it needs to break even as reported in September. That model was looking at a price of $8.99 a month and Iger is claiming it will be less.

Iger said the service will launch with "a lot of high quality," and will increase its price as the platform adds titles over time. The exec said there's a "gigantic" opportunity for Disney to pull in customers, pointing to potential deals for Disney credit card holders or theme park passes.

At the moment we know of four things that will be on this streaming service; a live action Star Wars show, a Marvel show (though we don't know what one), a High School Musical type show, and a Monsters, Inc. show. That covers pretty much the entire demographic that Disney is looking to cater to.

"The launch of our direct-to-consumer services mark an entirely new growth strategy for the company, one that takes advantage of the incredible opportunity that changing technology provides us to leverage the strength of our great brands," said Iger at the time.

Disney has a lot of good stuff and a lot of devoted fans but, if the number pan out the way they were looking do in September, that's 60+ million subscribers needed to break even. Maybe that's good enough for the House of Mouse.
