SDCC '15: Fun and Laughs at the Lego / DC Attack of the Legion of Doom Premiere
by Jeremy Konrad
Sunday is Kids day at SDCC, and that was readily apparent at the premiere of the new DC Comics Lego movie DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom (man that is a mouthful). I had personally never watched any of the movies that Lego has produced with their various licensed properties besides the Star Wars shorts. Before the screening began, Greg Miller from Kinda Funny came out to tell the crowd to make sure to cheer and boo the things we liked and didn't like for the producers and cast since they were also seeing the movie for the first time.
The movie itself was a delightful affair, very light-hearted and jokey and definitely for all ages.
The movie begins with Lex Luthor, Black Manta, and Gorilla Grodd watching a Lois Lane news report about the Justice League foiling many a villains plots and deciding that they also need to band together to form a Legion of Doom, which appears on the screen in giant yellow writing every time someone says it during the movie. Following that, Luther holds a secret meeting with Darkseid, who plans on taking over the Earth with Luthors help, keeping Luthors cohorts in the dark.
From there we are introduced to the Justice League through the eyes of Cyborg, who is actually the main hero we follow throughout the movie. He is seen here as the most junior member of the League. He walks us through the Hall of Justice to a room where the League is electing its new leader, Batman. Also kicking around are Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern. No Aquaman though…
After a hilarious scene with the Legion of Doom holding tryouts in a Wipeout-style obstacle course, we are treated to a fight between them and the League at a military base where Luther steals a container with a certain green Martian captured inside, while Sinestro bullies a unsure of himself Cyborg. Fearing it was his fault they got away, he then allows the League to fall for a cleaver trick by a confused and tricked Martian Manhunter working for Luther to have the entire League taken off planet by boom tube, so that Luther and Darkseid can take over the Earth.
After finding out Luther for who he is, Cyborg and Martian Manhunter figure out a way to bring them back in time for a final showdown with the Legion of Doom, where of course our heroes prevail and Martian Manhunter joins the team. After apprehending all the villains, we are treated to one last scene (yes even Lego movies have credits scenes these days) with Darkseid deciding the enemy of his enemy is his friend while hailing a ship with Brainiac heading towards Earth as credits roll.
Humor-wise, there is something for everyone here, as kids will laugh at the pratfalls and silly situations, but there are plenty of inside jokes for comic lovers as well, such as the secret military base being called the "New 52" instead of 51, and the Super Friends theme playing at least twice. There are also some nitpicks with some of the choices made. Having Green lantern and Flash constantly fighting over the affections of Wonder Woman being one of the prime examples, which also leads to them constantly ribbing each other. That was quite strange. Also during the first battle, you had Sinestro fighting the Flash and Captain Cold fighting Green Lantern, which just felt wrong. I want to see the Flash fight Cold.
But overall, between all of the puns (and man, there are a lot of puns), and excellent voice work from Troy Baker, Nolan North, James Arnold Taylor, Grey Griffin, Khary Payton, and Mark Hamill, you should seek this out. Especially if you have little ones running around, these movies are great introductions to the characters and I could not recommend them enough.
DC Comics Super Heroes: Justice League: Attack of the Legion of Doom is out on Blu-Ray and Digital on August 25
