Nerd Food: Kellogg's Spongebob Squarepants Cereal

Ooooohhh, who lives in a cereal box in my kitchen? Spongebob Squarepants! Yes! The lovable sea sponge is back in cereal form from Kellogg's! Just in time for the upcoming Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run coming out later this summer, this cereal is a sugary treat for people of all ages.

This cereal was recently on sale at my local grocery store, so it seemed only natural to grab a box. The last time I had this cereal was in 2004 when I was fresh out of high school. This past Saturday I poured myself a bowl, turned on Nickelodeon, and dove in. The cereal features vanilla squares with charming marshmallows in the shapes of Spongebob, Patrick, and the infamous pineapple under the sea.

I tried it first without milk, and it tasted great. It's not overly sweet and doesn't feel like I'm eating a cereal aimed at children. It reminds me a lot like Lucky Charms. The milk does add to it, and if you use plain milk (in my case, fat-free milk) the vanilla squares lend their flavor to the milk. I could see this tasting great with chocolate milk as well.

The packaging is the best part. Spongebob and Patrick are on either side of the box, their excited faces pulling you in. I like the 3-dimensional feel of the characters as well — they don't look flat. It's a nice update to the famous character without looking forced or creepy. Would I buy this again? Probably not. This is a fun novelty item that isn't offensive in taste, but I still prefer my bland, not Spongebob cereal.

Have you tried the updated Spongebob Squarepants cereal? If you loved it or hated it, let us know in the comments below!
