Star Trek: Terry Matalas/"Legacy" Update; Panel Contemplates Future
Star Trek: Picard Season 3 reunion panel reflected on the finale and how it COULD lead to a spinoff as Terry Matalas talks possibilities.
While it's a fitting final journey for the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D as the Star Trek: Picard series finale not only saw The Next Generation crew enjoy one more game of poker but also saw the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise-G take over with Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Cmdr. Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) and Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers) set off on their new journeys. The bulk of the cast reunited for Trek Talks, a marathon of Star Trek panels streamed on January 13th to benefit the Hollywood Food Coalition via TrekMovie. Included in the panel are showrunner Terry Matalas, actor/director Jonathan Frakes (Riker), Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher), Ryan, Ashlei Sharpe-Chestnut (Sydney La Forge), Michael Dorn (Worf), Brent Spiner (Data), and Todd Stashwick (Liam Shaw). Moderating were TNG and Picard actor Jonathan Del Arco (Hugh).
Star Trek: Picard Season Three Cast Discuss Potential Future
While the entire panel remained hopeful for a Star Trek: Legacy series, Matalas remained mum, saying, "If we were ever to do more," before stopping himself. "I'm not alluding to anything… I wish, I wish, there is no…[spin-off in development]" "You see all of us, you see Jeri in the final image of the show, and you kind of see what could come to be. I don't think we're done telling any of this. I think we can continue to go," Sharpe-Chestnut added with Sydney as a bridge member of the Enterprise-G crew.
After deferring to Frakes about how the final shots of Picard set up for the cast's future. "…You know it's interesting because [at] the end of the show, that last scene – although it is a setup for spin-off – it wasn't designed to be a setup of spin-off… The right ending for 'The Next Generation' is passing the torch to the next next generation," he said. "And without doing that, it wouldn't feel right. So that was watching – literally – their children go off on the Enterprise and paying off Seven of Nine's wonderful arc from Borg to captain of the flagship. That just felt like a proper ending."
As far as other possibilities, a popular discussion among fans with spinoffs includes a Dorn-led Worf series. "I think what's interesting about a series that has been on the air for so many decades is the evolution of things," Matalas said. "Michael [Dorn] and I were talking, what if we did more? You think, what's the Klingon Empire like [in the early 25th century]? The last time they were an allegory to the Russians kind of, and now? What would they be up to and what does that mean for Worf and what does that mean for Alexander? So what's so great about this kind of very, very long format – the fact that Leonard Nimoy played Spock for how many years? I mean, that's incredible. I don't think you ever really need to fully say goodbye to any of these characters or storylines. I think it's that's what's so special about what we're doing."
