Superman x Milk-Bone: Elizabeth Tulloch on S&L Krypto, Dogs & More

Superman & Lois star Elizabeth Tulloch spoke with Bleeding Cool about her work with Milk-Bone, their 40-dog screening of Superman, and more.

Elizabeth Tulloch has been fortunate enough to have two signature roles in her 25-year career as Eve/Juliette Silveron in the NBC supernatural series Grimm and as Lois Lane in The CW series Superman & Lois. After playing Lois for the better part of six years across six Arrowverse shows, the Greg Berlanti and Todd Helbing-created series hung up its cape in 2024, with Tulloch more than happy to pass that torch to the next generation of Loises that includes Superman (2025) star Rachel Brosnahan. While promoting her partnership with Milk-Bone, Tulloch spoke to Bleeding Cool about her work with the dog treat company to see the James Gunn film that stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, her love for brachycephalic dog breeds, missing out on her Superman & Lois co-star Tyler Hoechlin's final moments as Clark/Superman shared with Krypto, and her and Hoechlin's conscience decision to avoid most other screen adaptations of Superman.

Bleeding Cool: How did you partner up with Milk-Bone, and what was the pitch to you?

Well, it wasn't much of a pitch, because I immediately was excited about the idea. I'm a huge dog lover, and [my spouse and I] had a disabled French Bulldog who passed in March of 2020. We rescued another dog in March of 2025, so we've been training him a lot. It was a no-brainer for me because Milk-Bone is his favorite training treat, and it makes sense when you think of a dog treat, you think Milk-Bone. It's one of those things in my brain. The company's been around since 1908, and they're big dog lovers. I know Krypto is a big part of the 'Superman' movie, but I haven't seen it yet. I'm seeing it with 40 dogs (on July 10), including Marvin, our new rescue, who's coming with me. They'll all have little Superman capes on, so I think it's going to be a fun way to watch the movie.

Speaking of Krypto, as it relates to 'Superman & Lois,' I know in the finale, they introduced Krypto as a Golden Retriever there, and I was wondering if you spent any time with that golden when Tyler did his scenes?

No, which bums me out so much, because now I heard the Golden Retriever they cast as Krypto was very sweet as Goldens usually are, then I heard in the day they were shooting the scene where Clark has the heart attack and falls to the ground in Smallville, the Golden kept pouncing on Tyler, slobbering all over him, and kissing him because the Golden is worried that there was something wrong with him. They were like, "Oh, get him out, it's not working," so I wish I'd been on set that day, but I did not get to meet that dog, sadly, because I go crazy for dogs. I can't…I love walking Marvin now that he's old enough to go for walks, because I am crazy big dog lover.

Did you have any particular breed that's your favorite?

Well, unfortunately, my favorite breeds are the brachycephalic, and they have a lot of hard time (breathing), it's the squishy-faced breeds. There are some health problems that go along with that we found out about the hard way with Henry, our French bulldog. Marvin, our rescue pug…there are two kinds of pugs: the fluffy, chubby ones and the leaner ones. We didn't know what we were going to get. Obviously, he's a rescue, but he seemed to be the leaner, healthier one. Given all that, we went through quite a lot medically with Henry, our French bulldog. It's nice to have a…David's [Giuntoli] always like, "You get to be happy because you get your little squish face that you love, but he's happier, because he's a healthier, leaner breed."

My ex had two French bulldogs, who were pretty cute.

They have great personalities, but I'm always screaming from the rooftops, "You must have health insurance for them." They're bred to be cute, and if you're going to get a dog like an English bulldog, French bulldog, or even a pug…we got health insurance for Marvin the day we brought him home, God forbid. These particular dogs are notorious for having health problems. You don't want to have to make decisions about your dogs based on whether you can afford it. If you're going to get a breed that has health problems, that's something that everyone should really consider.

I wanted to talk about the series. When you were initially approached to play Lois, did you want to do your take on it? Were there any inspirations from past Lois's you wanted to evoke?

No, I had only ever seen to this day the [Richard] Donner version, the very first one with [Christopher] Reeve and [Margot] Kidder. Tyler and I both purposely avoided watching anything else because we felt like we had been cast in these roles for a reason, and we should lean on whatever our instincts were. When I go to the Milk-Bone screening, that'll be the second time I've ever even seen any other Superman or Lois on screen.

Superman & Lois, which also stars Alex Garfin, Indie Navarrette, Erik Valdez, Wolé Parks, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Dylan Walsh, Sofia Hasmik, and Jordan Elsass, is available to stream on HBO Max. Warner Bros' Superman, which also stars Nicholas Hoult, Skyler Gisondo, Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabella Merced, Wendell Pierce, and Beck Bennett, is now playing in theaters.
