Final Fantasy XIV's Hrothgar and Viera Will Be The Last New Playable Races
In the latest "Letter from the Producer" stream for Final Fantasy XIV, Game Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida revealed that, due to the difficulties of developing new races for the MMO, the gender-locked Hrothgar and Viera races will be the final races added to FFXIV.
While it may not seem like it, adding a new race to the game involves quite a bit of work for the dev team to make sure all items appear properly on the new character models, and that each has its unique expressions, gestures, and emotes.
Yoshida also discussed the possibility of getting younger character models for the player character. Essentially, it's a flat no for "moral and ethical reasons." Both due to the moral dilemma of showing young children in pain and because of the possibility that players will exploit the younger character models for lewd purposes.
The stream also discusses the reason why there are only two new jobs being released in Shadowbringers, and with no healer specifically. Damcer was added as a ranged DPS job to bring that sub-class in line with the three healers and three tanks, so ranged DPS jobs will be on the same level. No new healer was developed due to time constraints on the development cycle, however, Yoshida has noted that fans want a new healer job so we may see a fourth healer post-Shadowbringers.
